PMOPoint Frequently Asked Questions

This page is designed for decision-makers, delivery leads, IT architects, and skeptical reviewers alike. We believe the best clients ask tough questions. Here are our answers.

General Overview

What exactly is PMOPoint?

PMOPoint is a portfolio operating system built on top of Microsoft 365. It aligns strategy with execution using real-time dashboards inside Power BI, SharePoint, and Teams – with no new platforms, licenses, or vendors required.

Is PMOPoint a product or a service?

It’s a productized service – a strategic solution delivered via native Microsoft scripts and templates. You get a working system (not a framework), deployed inside your tenant, plus optional advisory support.

Who is PMOPoint for?

PMOPoint is for any organization managing complex portfolios in Microsoft 365 – whether you’re a federal agency, engineering firm, municipality, or research institution. We support both technical teams and non-technical executives with different views of the same truth.

Where did it come from?

PMOPoint was originally engineered for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It was created to help unify portfolio oversight across one of the most complex mission-driven environments in the world.

Implementation & Technical Questions

Does PMOPoint require a new platform or login?

No. PMOPoint runs entirely inside your existing Microsoft 365 environment. No new vendors, no third-party platform, and no additional ATO required.

How long does implementation take?

Most clients are live within 4–6 weeks, with an initial pilot usually visible within days using your own data. There’s no 12-month implementation cycle or rip-and-replace requirement.

What Microsoft 365 components does PMOPoint use?

  • Power BI
  • SharePoint Online
  • Power Automate
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Optional use of Project for the Web or Planner

What tenant type do we need?

Any enterprise Microsoft 365 tenant (Commercial, GCC, or GCC High) will work. PMOPoint is fully compatible with FedRAMP-cleared Microsoft environments – because it lives inside your infrastructure.

Does PMOPoint require FedRAMP certification?

No – because PMOPoint is not a SaaS platform or external vendor product. It’s delivered as Microsoft-native customization inside your tenant, using tools you already ATO’d.

Can we modify the dashboards ourselves?

Yes. You retain full control over all Power BI reports, datasets, and logic. PMOPoint is transparent by design – no black boxes.

What happens if we stop paying?

Your dashboards and automations continue working. You’ll no longer receive support or updates, but nothing will be shut off or revoked. Your data stays yours.

Questions from Economic Buyers (CIO, CFO, Exec Director)

What strategic problems does PMOPoint solve?

  • Aligns projects with organizational goals (OKRs)
  • Surfaces waste and duplication across portfolios
  • Reduces executive dependency on manual reporting
  • Enables strategic agility without requiring new systems

What’s the business case?

PMOPoint helps you invest in what matters and stop what doesn’t. It reduces rework, reporting labor, and initiative sprawl – all while giving your team a shared understanding of priorities.

What’s the ROI?

Typical clients see ROI in the form of:

  • Reduced reporting overhead (hours saved per cycle)
  • Faster strategic course corrections
  • Avoidance of failed or redundant projects
  • Better-informed funding decisions

We can help you define and measure these metrics based on your portfolio.

Why wouldn’t we just use a tool like ServiceNow, Clarity, or Smartsheet?

Those tools are powerful – but often overkill for organizations already invested in Microsoft 365. PMOPoint adds the portfolio alignment layer without forcing you to switch platforms or standardize everything.

Questions from Technical Champions (PMO, IT Strategy, Architects)

Is this just a bunch of Power BI reports?

No – PMOPoint includes data architecture, automation logic, OKR mapping, federated views, and project/portfolio-level linkage. Reports are the visible part, but the system underneath is what creates value.

Will this replace our current PM tools?

No. PMOPoint federates existing tools. Your departments can keep using what they like – Planner, Project for the Web, Excel, etc. PMOPoint connects them at the strategy layer.

Can we build this ourselves in-house?

You absolutely could. But doing so would take months, and often derails internal capacity. PMOPoint gives you the result of hundreds of hours of tuning, iteration, and field-tested performance – with no lift on your end.

And if you want to build on top of it, you can – you own the environment.

What’s included in support?

  • Monthly updates to templates and scripts
  • Access to improvements based on client feedback
  • Optional access to Forward Deployed Experts (FDEs) for strategic enablement

Questions from Even the Most Skeptical Internal Influencers (Procurement, Internal Dev Teams)

Why should we pay license fees for a script-based system?

Because you’re not just paying for code – you’re paying for:

  • A proven, supported solution
  • Access to updates, improvements, and best practices
  • Faster time to value
  • Strategic enablement built into the model
  • Zero vendor risk – PMOPoint runs in your tenant

You could build it yourself – but you’d also own the maintenance, support, and risk.

Isn’t this just consulting?

No – it’s a productized service. You’re not buying hours. You’re buying a working, supported solution that delivers value out of the gate. Support and advisory options are available, but they’re optional.

What’s a Forward Deployed Expert (FDE)?

Think of an FDE like Microsoft’s legacy PFEs – an embedded strategic advisor who works inside your M365 environment to help your team succeed. They don’t just configure dashboards – they help you interpret and act on them.

Is this secure?

Yes – PMOPoint is deployed inside your tenant using Microsoft-native tools. No data leaves your environment. All flows and dashboards are inspectable and auditable.

Is this a risk to our internal team?

No. We’re not a shadow IT vendor or a black-box solution. PMOPoint is transparent, auditable, and collaborative. Your team can own and extend it at any time.

Strategic Philosophy

What does PMOPoint replace?

It doesn’t replace tools – it replaces guesswork.
Think of PMOPoint as the connective tissue between the work and the strategy – across departments, tools, and teams.

What if we’re not “mature enough” for this?

You don’t need to be perfect to benefit from alignment. PMOPoint works even with imperfect data and evolving practices – and it helps you get better over time.

What makes PMOPoint different from other PM tools?

  • Built inside Microsoft 365 – no new stack
  • No vendor lock
  • Transparent and modifiable
  • Born at NASA’s JPL, optimized for real-world teams
  • Supports strategic alignment, not just execution oversight
